Got a little person in your family who frequently rubs her eyes
and complains of a runny nose and headache? Allergies might just be the culprit. What if you
suspect that the family pet makes matters worse? Here are some
great tips to help you address how to keep your child much more
comfortable:
-
Pet
dander (flakes of skin on an animal’s coat) frequently releases
cells that trigger allergies. So keep the family pet off your
child’s bed, where dander can then be dropped on the linens.
- Don’t allow...

Do you have a sensitive sniffer? I mean, does
your nose burn and itch when you get in the detergent aisle at the
grocery store? How do you get relief?
For some, food odors, the scent of perfume and chemical smells
do more than just annoy. For those with asthma, being in
close proximity to strong scents can trigger serious respiratory
ailments. So when a friend says she doesn't want to
accompany you to the boutique filled with bath and body items, it
is probably not that she doesn't enjoy your...

I know that fewer people smoke these days than in years past and
that is a good thing. I just read that
lung cancer accounts
for more deaths in the U.S. than the next four deadliest cancers
combined.
The article in the Indy Star went on to say that of all the new
cases diagnosed, 17.9% are people who have never smoked. That was a
surprise to me. I mean,
that's almost 20% of people
diagnosed with lung cancer - and they never smoked!Of course, I read this after dinner last night in a local...

You don’t have to see it.
But if your nose starts to drip or your throat feels scratchy or
your chest feels tight, you know without seeing that
something in the air is triggering allergens.
Many people assume that the feathers or the fur of animals is what
makes their allergies flair. But actually, the human body reacts to
the animal’s saliva, the proteins in the animal’s dander
(dead skin) and its urine - I know, yuk.
But maybe instead of animals, you are
sensitive to dust mites. They are...

In
the second February 2010 issue of the American Journal of
Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine the results of a study were
published indicating that
the use of high efficiency
particle air (HEPA) filters significantly improved a key
measure of cardiovascular health in healthy, non-smoking elderly
individuals.
The key measure was the function of small finger
blood vessels. In a prepared statement, Dr. Steffen Loft of the
Institute of Public Health in Copenhagen, said, "This effect most
likely...

In 1973, NASA
scientists identified 107 volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
inside SkyLab. Mainly those were chemicals found in the
air due to "off-gassing," which is
low-level emission of
chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene from
products in the facility. Those three chemicals are thought to
be carcinogens.
Since 1973 most consumers are aware that VOCs are
present in our homes from furniture, carpet, paint and other
products in which adhesives, paints and stains are
used, as...

Living in a large metropolitan area, there is a tremendous amount
of road construction. I am used to that, but yesterday I saw a
hazy cloud of dust that seemed to be settled on top of the
houses next to the expressway.

I don't think yesterday was an ozone alert day, but the sight of
that dust cloud made me think of all the outdoor air
pollutants that end up inside our homes. I'm glad I don't live next
to the expressway, but I am not sure that really, truly makes a
difference. When there is a...

I
just spent the weekend with a sneezer. I felt really bad
because this person has allergies and spent the weekend sniffling
and sneezing. She was never far from a tissue. It's not that
we were outside in a field pulling weeds and looking for
mushrooms. But just
staying in a hotel and attending a
wedding shower in a restuarant was enough for
her.
I am surprised she doesn't travel with an electric air cleaner
or air purifier. So this morning I wanted to learn
more - and I did!
I went to
air-purifi...

With this being Air Quality Awareness Week, there has been much
talk in the media and around the watercoolers about the air quality
across the nation.
Reports cards have been released giving A - F
grades (F being the worst) for air quality in many cities and
counties and all the states. My area received a resounding
F!
I don't have respiratory issues, but
many parents here are
worried about the ozone and particle pollution and the impact on
their children. The
American Lung Association provided...
