Although experts agree that mattresses and pillows collect dead
skin cells and dust mites through the years, they are less likely
to agree on how much weight that ends up adding.
There are stories that after 8 to 10 years, your
mattress could weigh anywhere from 10 pounds more to doubling the
weight of the foam, filler and springs.
No
matter how much weight is added, it's all pretty disgusting when
you think how much time we spend rolling around on it EVERY
day. It's very likely that dust mites...

I know of one good way to
improve
airflow through your house - at least for a while.

I love a nice breeze through my house. On a beautiful warm day,
there's nothing better than opening all the windows and letting
fresh air flow through the rooms - it's just refreshing!
But by this time of summer, the temperatures have risen to the
point that it's time to close the windows and turn on the air
conditioning system. I know that the heat of central
Indiana doesn't compare to the southern states from...

You know how when you learn about something or how to do
something and it becomes second nature or feels like
common sense? Well, I have to admit that is how I am with the
AirFlow Breeze now.
It just makes so much sense and is so simple to install and
use.
What is a register vent
booster fan?
Simply, the purpose of the appliance is to pull all the air
that has been heated or cooled into the room. You get the
benefit of all the energy and money you are spending to make your
home the temperature you...

As
much as I love visiting family, there is one major obstacle: they
have households full of smokers. Me being one of the few
non-smokers, I try to not complain - but it's difficult.
Not only do I find the smell hard to deal with, but my eyes start
to itch and I then I start having trouble breathing. By the
time I leave their houses, my throat is so scratchy; I sound like a
smoker myself - and I don't really like that either.
Make non-smokers more comfortable in a smoky
environment
Recently, a...

One of the most
destructive results of the recent ice storm we had here in
Central Indiana was to roofs. They were leaking all over the place
and now that the ice has melted, the roofers are really busy making
lots and lots of repairs.
I was in one office last week that had some damage. It didn't seem
too bad - at least until they started pulling down ceiling tiles
and wet insulation.
One of the employees there has severe allergies and she almost
couldn't work. I don't know if it was dust or...

An
air purifier, especially one with a HEPA
filter, are great at removing airborne allergens - up to 99.97%
of them!
But what about at the office?Allergens are brought into the work environment
piggybacking on every worker who walks by. This is
especially a problem in the cubicle officce environments where the
air is free to circulate in, around and between every desk area and
worker.

You may love Sally, she's a great gal. But oh,
that cat of hers comes into your workspace every time Sally...

Comfort for women is always an issue, isn't it?
I mean, women are the stereotypical thermostat adjusters (to be
more comfortable) while men seem to be the thermostat regulators
(to save money).
I learned this week that
women are actually more prone to
having cold arms, hands, legs and feet because of the way their
bodies work - which is the reason they always want to
adjust the thermostat. Maintaining a comfortable home temperature
is difficult.
But I learned something else about women and...

I don't think I want to admit how much time over the years I have
spent reading tips for making life better. After so many years, I
don't often come up with anything that is new. However, today I
have. First, I found a site called
Chiff.com that is an information clearing
house with links to good sites all across the Web.
In an article there, I actually found 4 new tips to save
money on utility bills this winter that were new to me.
So I thought I would share them with you:
1. In colder area it...

Stephenitch of Parker, Colorado for submitting the winning
entry telling us "Why he loves his AirFlow Breeze!"
He has won the Canon Power Shot SD940 IS digital ELPH.
Andrew says it best:
"I have to say I was a
little skeptical when I first ordered the AirFlow Breeze
unit for our kids' rooms. Man, was I WRONG. These registers
are AWESOME!! In both of the rooms that we installed the units, the
temperature was so significantly...

I used to make the general statement that space heaters are
hazardous, even dangerous. But with the "Smart" Seabreeze
Thermaflo Space Heater, I need to take back those extreme words.
The Seabreeze products are really "smart," in all the
senses of the word.
First off, the Thermaflo
heaters are energy smart. They automatically
switch to an energy-efficient power-saving green only mode, which
results in an 33 1/3% energy savings! This happens when
the heater senses when the room temperature reaches...

I am dog-sitting this weekend and even though we are supposed to
be getting an unseasonable warm-up in the next couple of days, the
early morning air is cold, there is frost on the grass and the
whipping winds make it seem like winter is ready to settle in on
us. So I wrapped up in my robe as I watched the little creature
shiver on the step. She definitely didn't stay out long - and I
don't blame her one bit.
It made me wonder what pets, especially those who are
older and perhaps, arthritic, need...

It's that time of year here in central Indiana where it is really
warm - say 60 - 70 degrees - one day and then
30 degrees the next. Warm - cold - warm - cold.
Repeat. They call it unseasonably, but it seems to happen
every year. Whatever, we are now starting to have
more cold days than warm and the next thing will be snow.

Every year as I pull out the sweaters and sweatshirts, I start
looking for ways to make my house comfortable while keeping costs
in check. Not an easy task and every year I...

I was reading a woman's comments about how she was reducing the
cost of heating her home last winter. She said she hung heavy
curtains between rooms and closed vents to all but two rooms in her
house. Then she set her thermostat at about 55 degrees and used a
kerosene heater to heat the two rooms she lived in. She said she
reduced her bill by about 60%.
I didn't know much about kerosene heaters, so I thought I would
find out more. I did a little surfing and this is what I
learned:

I just read a news release from the Center for Disease Control
about the common cold. They said that September is one of
the peak months for colds. I shouldn’t have been
surprised.
It is September when your children go back to school and
the weather starts changing that they paddle into the kitchen in
the morning all sniffly and snuffly. Then the temperatures
start falling and the air can’t hold as much water vapor and it
gets really dry. More snuffly noses and then scratchy throats.
You
can...

I was talking with a local heating and air conditioning provider
this week at the local fast-food establishment. I mentioned
something about his getting ready for the winter season and he just
laughed.
He said that the heat this summer has just worn him
out. I agreed since heat and I don't do well together, but
that wasn't what he was talking about. He said they have been so
busy just trying to keep up with the customer demand they don't
have time to even sit and eat lunch. They are eating in...

We have been getting a lot of inquiries about the new
Airflow Breeze baseboard register vent booster fan application -
and we're thrilled!
Tim and Alex recently asked when the new product would be available
in comments left on a
blog post to give an update on the prototypes of
the adapter.
The questions they asked were when the product
would be available and where they could get one - or two - or
three!
They aren't the only ones asking, so I thought I'd better give a
quick update on the status....

As winter approaches, many of us are
thinking about better managing energy costs. Oil and gas prices continue to
escalate. In some homes, heating and air conditioning systems are
not well balanced. Some installations require a booster fan to
improve airflow. There
are several ideas to consider for supplemental heating. Products
such as a space heater, pellet stove or fireplace insert
etc. A space
heater can be a good choice if you have a small area. Although a space heater has
