There is a national day for just about every disease, person, organization and event you can find. But when I heard that Jan. 3 is National Sleep Day, I really had to wonder why.
However, I realized that doctors have said for a (very) long time that if patients got more sleep, we'd be healthier.
So, with a little flick of the wrist, I gathered a little info on doing just that. Dr. Phyllis Zee of Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Sleep Disorder Clinic offered several tips to get a good night's sleep on the ABC News. There were some that were particularly interesting to us here at AirFlow Technology.
She says you have to make the entire sleep environment comfortable:
If you find you have more energy, fewer sniffles and clearer thinking - it might be just what you need - without the expense of a doctor visit.

She says you have to make the entire sleep environment comfortable:
- temperature - on the cooler side
- darkness - as dark as possible
- humidity - in the winter, use a humidifier (ideal level is between 40 - 60%)
- air purifier - important for those with allergies and for the continual soothing sound that relaxes (Another machine can be used like a sound machine, but why not use one tool for both?)
- aromatherapy - can be used if it calms a person
- keep extremeties warm - wear socks and use enough blankets
- caffeine and alcohol - avoid caffeinated drinks in the late afternoon and evening and alcohol at least 2 hours before bed
- liquids - avoid drinking too much before bed so you don't have to make a pitstop during the night
- bedding - make sure your pillow supports your neck and head and that your bed does not sag and cause back pain
If you find you have more energy, fewer sniffles and clearer thinking - it might be just what you need - without the expense of a doctor visit.
