State Farm provided several tips to avoid bacteria build-up and use the bags in a safe and healthy way:
- Transport groceries only, to avoid contamination.
- Raw meat and produce carry the most bacteria, so keep these separate from ready-to-eat foods.
- Air out cloth bags after you unpack groceries and wash them on a regular basis.
Even though it may seem counterproductive, I always put meats in one of the plastic bags before putting it in my cloth bag. Then that plastic bag is discarded once I unpack the meats.
Most of the bags I have collected can be washed in the washing machine without a problem, but if you have some which may be a problem, put them in a pillow case and tie it with string. That way if it does come apart or the material falls apart, all the mess will be contained in the pillow case and you wan't have it clogging up your machine.
