Indoor humidity levels are tricky to maintain

Indoor humidity is often a problem for people. Getting it right makes life at home more comfortable.

In the winter, the ideal humidity level eliminates the 'zaps' and dry, itchy skin, not to mention the sore scratchy throats and cough. For winter, the ideal humidity level is between 40% and 60%.

Condensation on windows (and walls, floors and ceilings!) can be a problem if the indoor humidity levels get too high in any season.

An article in the Chicago Tribune provided an aha! moment when I read:

A family of four can add a half pint of water vapor every hour to the home just through normal breathing and perspiration.

A combination of water vapor and temperature creates condensation on the inside of windows.Author Alan J Heavens goes on to give the following tidbits:
  • a five-minute shower can produce a half pint of water vapor
  • cooking dinner on a gas stove can produce two and a half pints of water vapor
  • freshly cut firewood consists of up to 45% water - even well-seasoned firewood can contain 20% to 25% moisture
Those bits made me realize how much the activity in a household can change the moisture levels in the air, so occupants need to keep a closer watch on the humidity levels.

The author was addressing condensation on windows in his article, and said the experts at Simonton Windows made the following recomendations:

  • Use exhaust fans in the bathrooms and kitchen and open windows when high-moisture is present.
  • Set humidifiers to the correct outside temperature.
  • If your basement is damp, use a dehumidifier.
  • Open curtains and allow for greater air circulation around windows.

Another good way to improve air circulation in the rooms of your home is to install a register vent booster fan. The fan draws air from the ducts into the room, which also eliminates cold air pockets. Keeping the room warmer longer delays the furnace kicking on, reducing the amount of time it runs saving money in utility bills.
