Energy saving tips and green and cost-effective solutions for health and house comfort--these things are our raison d'être here at AirFlow Technology!
Perhaps you caught Davina's recent post on how to keep cool in summer. A little late to the table but nevertheless bringing a tasty dish to the potluck meal of summer coolness, Terri Karush Rogers has published in the New York Times an article called Surviving Summer on an Air-Conditioning Diet. Apparently one may reduce calorie intake and the temperature at the same time!
One ingredient in this casserole caught my eye in particular: "If you live in a low-humidity climate, look into buying an evaporative cooling system." According to Wikipedia,
Evaporative coolers (also called swamp coolers, desert coolers, or air coolers) are devices that cool air through the simple evaporation of water. They differ from refrigeration or absorption air conditioning, which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles.
Evaporative cooling is especially well suited for climates where the air is hot and humidity is low. For example, in the United States, the western/mountain states are good locations, with swamp coolers very prevalent in cities like Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, El Paso, Tucson, and Fresno where sufficient water is available.
In dry, arid climates, the installation and operating cost of an evaporative cooler can be much lower than refrigerative air conditioning, often by 80% or so. However, evaporative cooling and vapor-compression air conditioning are sometimes used in combination to yield optimal cooling results. Some evaporative coolers may also serve as humidifiers in the heating season.
Scrumptious!
Another "dietary aid" you might find useful is our own AirFlow Breeze register booster (air register booster, heating and air conditioning booster), which allows you to take care of a "problem room" (a room that simply refuses to get cool) without turning up the A/C for your entire home. The Breeze pulls extra cool air from your ducts to make a problem room comfortable. Please take a look at our 0:43 video about the AirFlow Breeze that demonstrates why comfort is a breeze!
