8 tips for pet owners when their children have allergies

Wednesday, April 18, 2012 by Comfort Team

Got a little person in your family who frequently rubs her eyes and complains of a runny nose and headache? Allergies might just be the culprit. What if you suspect that the family pet makes matters worse? Here are some great tips to help you address how to keep your child much more comfortable:

  1. Pet dander (flakes of skin on an animal’s coat) frequently releases cells that trigger allergies. So keep the family pet off your child’s bed, where dander can then be dropped on the linens.
  2. Don’t allow...

Improve air circulation for a happy (and mold-free) spring

Monday, April 9, 2012 by Comfort Team

Here comes spring time! Warmer air and more sunshine. And rain.  That business about spring being “in like a lion and out like a lamb” fails to also include warnings about the rainfall involved in an unusually wet season change.

And after this unusually (strikingly!) mild winter, who knows what spring will bring.

You might be thinking only about tackling some serious spring cleaning and planning a couple of yard sales to purge unwanted junk or maybe you are toying with the idea of buying a new...

Simple Solution to Protect Your Home in High Humidity Climates

Monday, March 26, 2012 by Comfort Team

As an aging Baby Boomer, you might be dreaming already about living a fun-filled, post-retirement life. Some of us can't wait to lace up golf shoes and schedule lots more tee times. Others hope to travel. Still others simply want to lounge around with a coffee cup until noon.

Soon after retiring two years ago, a friend of mine decided she wanted to become a Snow Bird and spend the winter under a palm tree.

She headed south and carefully scouted areas of interest, spoke to neighbors and discovered...

Eliminate radon gas with ventilator fans

Monday, February 27, 2012 by Comfort Team
Don't panic if you perform a test and discover that radon is present in your home. You can't see, smell or taste this radioactive gas.

It's important to understand that radon is everywhere, and it's even more important to understand that rado is cancer-causing, most often leading to lung cancer. So if you happen to be a smoker, residing in an environment where high levels of radon go undetecxted, your risk of developing lung cancer is terrifyingly high - and test kits are easy to use and...

Indoor humidity levels are tricky to maintain

Friday, January 27, 2012 by Comfort Team
Indoor humidity is often a problem for people. Getting it right makes life at home more comfortable.

In the winter, the ideal humidity level eliminates the 'zaps' and dry, itchy skin, not to mention the sore scratchy throats and cough. For winter, the ideal humidity level is between 40% and 60%.

Condensation on windows (and walls, floors and ceilings!) can be a problem if the indoor humidity levels get too high in any season.

An article in the Chicago Tribune provided an aha! moment when I read:

A...

How to achieve ideal humidity in the winter house

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 by Comfort Team

Parents are really concerned about the health of their children. We know here at AirFlow Technology because we get a lot of inquiries about air quality issues when it comes to children.

There are a lot of ways that children are different than adults and their needs vary accordingly. However, when it comes to the ideal humidity level for the air children breathe, it is essentially the same as it is for adults: between 40% and 60%.

If you are getting zapped every time you reach for a lightswitch...

Having a comfortable home is a modern concept

Wednesday, January 4, 2012 by Comfort Team
Just finished reading Bill Bryson's book, Home. It's chock full of tidbits about how our homes and the accoutrements of daily life came to be and be named. Very interesting.

One concept I found very surprising is that the idea of having comfort at home was foreign until the 18th century!! The word "comfortable" was only used in the context of "capable of being consoled."

Bryson says, "Comfort was something you gave to the wounded or distressed." At that time it was commonly referred to...Read More »

Make your home beautiful with LEDs and the temperature comfortable with the AirFlow Breeze

Sunday, December 25, 2011 by Comfort Team
Here at AirFlow Technology we are always looking for energy saving tips for consumers to not only save energy, but money, too. I know it's a great thing that the new LED holiday lights consume up to 15% less energy than the old strings of holiday lights!!

I'd already decided that as old strings of lights were tossed, I'd replace them with this new - more costly, but longer lasting - alternative. That, as it turns out, is just about all I can do. Let me explain.

We don't like the air to be too...Read More »

Low humidity affects more than just the living creatures in your home

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 by Comfort Team
Do you have any idea what lack of humidity can do to your furniture?

Nope? I didn't either, but I do now.

I know here at AirFlow Technology we talk alot about air quality and creating comfortable rooms for all the living creatures in your house.

For people, lack of humidity in the air through the winter months means dry throats and itchy skin. We end up with a tickle that means we cough and static electricity zapping us all - including the pets.

But furniture suffers, too. While we were moving...Read More »

Make winter comfortable in your home with the help of Airflow Technology

Monday, December 5, 2011 by Comfort Team

When you slide between the bed sheets at the end of the evening, do you find yourself groaning and mumbling some frustrations later in the night? Do you wake up feeling like someone stuffed cotton balls in both of your nostrils? Chances are that you climb out of bed to turn the thermostat down, thinking it’s too hot. Then later, you wake up again, freezing half to death.

When you get that stuffy-air feeling again, it might have absolutely nothing to do with the furnace and the temperature in your...

We've come a long way, baby! Keep the humidity level in your home perfect

Sunday, November 27, 2011 by Comfort Team

When I was a kid, our makeshift humidifying techniques consisted of boiling water on the stove, sitting in the bathroom with the door closed so we could breathe in the steam from the hot shower and placing pans of water over the furnace vents.

Crane cool mist humidifiers come in lots of kid-friendly shapes. As that old saying goes, “We’ve come a long way, baby.’ And that is especially true of the products offered by Air Flow Technology. There you'll find fun, animal-shaped portable Crane humidifiers, especially created for a child’s bedroom. They range from...

Just what should you do about those ducts?

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 by Comfort Team
Should air ducts be cleaned?

Dust mites feed on dust and like to live in air ducts. As a practical matter, if you have ever looked inside your ducts (or experienced that rush of dust that comes the first time you turn on the HVAC systems in the fall) you know that ducts collect a lot of dust. I have heard they are a common home of the dust mite as well.

Yes, it's that dust that bothers allergy-sufferers and makes everyone sneeze once in a while. But does it warrant hiring someone to come in especially to clean the ducts? Would an air purifier be...Read More »

Would you be better off working in the zoo?

Sunday, September 18, 2011 by Comfort Team
Ok, I read a quote today that really made me laugh. I am not sure it is all that funny, but I do have a tendancy to laugh at irony ...

I read the quote from Judith Heerwagen, Ph.D., an environmental psychologist based in Seattle,  Washington on creativityatwork.com.

She completed a study of office workers in the United States and said, "more time and creativity has gone into designing natural habitats for zoo animals than in creating comfortable office space for humans."

That could explain the te... Read More »

Get ready to improve sleep and indoor humidity with a Crane humidifier this winter

Friday, September 16, 2011 by Comfort Team
Parents all over the country suspected it - but now there has been a study that proves their suspicions were correct.

There IS a big connection between the amount of sleep kids get and their academic performance!! Getting your kids to bed on time (read: early) does pay off at school.

The study was conducted by the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Ramon Llull University on 6- and 7-year old children.

Science Daily reports that the study found

that sleeping less than nine hours, going to bed...

Improve the garden barn experience with a ventilator fan

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 by Comfort Team
Even in the heat of summer we have to take care of the yard outside and for me, that means spending time in the garden shed.

My garden barn is the storage place for all my garden and yard equipment. If your shed or barn is anything like mine, it is closed up most of the time and is actually a storage place for all the yard and garden equipment like rakes, shovels, the wheelbarrow and the mower. It also stores the extra half-bag of manure and potting soil and a variety of chemicals, fertilizers and the accompanying spreaders and sprayers.

I hate going in there. When you...Read More »

Not only is mold unsightly - it is VERY bad for your health. There are several things you can do to prevent the growth of mold and mildew in your home.

Here are a few:

Humans and animals both benefit from HEPA air purifiers

Saturday, July 30, 2011 by Comfort Team

With the heat in full blast and the pollution in the air, people across the nation are dealing with ozone alerts. It makes it hard to breathe outdoors for everyone and particularly, those people who suffer with allergies. So many do their best to remain indoors.

Air purifiers make indoor air breathable for allergy sufferers.Pollen is the biggest trigger of allergies - and it comes into our homes every day with us. Air purifiers with HEPA filters battle the problem in homes - and appliances like the BlueAir HEPA Silent Air Purifier that we have available make...

Ideal greenhouse humidity levels are the same as ideal humidity levels in your home

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 by Comfort Team

It is spring and all the gardeners out there are just chomping at the bit to get their hands in the dirt.

So they will all understand when I complain about my frustration with all the rain this spring. My yard is mush - even with my muck boots on, the soil is too wet and muddy to play in.

What do frustrated gardeners do when they can't garden? Flip through garden books, magazines and catalogs - and, in my case, spend hours on the Internet looking up "garden stuff."

You can have blooms are year long in a greenhouse.I don't have a greenhouse, but,...

AirFlow Technology offers crawl space ventilator fans with continuous run feature to alleviate radon gas

Sunday, March 6, 2011 by Comfort Team

Some time ago I wrote about using a crawl space ventilator fan to remove trapped radon gas in the crawl space.

Radon gas is a naturally ocurring radioactive gas that the EPA says is second only to cigarette smoking in the cause of lung cancer for smokers and the LEADING cause for non-smokers!

Large levels of the gas require a special removal system, but even low levels can be hazardous, so it is a good idea to remove any radon that is discovered.

If you want to test your home for radon, test kits...
