Maybe you’ve seen the rather odd, tall, skinny structures,
usually in wide open spaces where high winds move the
propeller-like sections. When a group of these wind turbines work
to move air- which then turns into energy- they are identified as
wind farms. In some locations, such as the Gansu Wind Farm in China
or the Alta Wind Energy Center in California, the wind farms
produce electrical power for several hundred people within several
hundred square miles.
Rising
energy prices and more...

You took the leap and jumped headfirst into the real estate
pond. You've fulfilled a lifelong dream: the purchase of a
sprawling, two-story Victorian home. You fell in love with the
original hardwood floors, the beautiful windows, a wrap-around
porch, birds in the trees and woodwork so gorgeous that it makes
you want to weep. Congratulations!
There’s just one something that’s missing - And it’s an
important something.
As it turns out, your residential gem has no central air
conditioning. But...

Yes, it's been a warm winter most everywhere in the nation. That
may mean that this summer is going to be beastly. So NOW is the
time to install that attic fan you have wanted because you KNOW
that venting the hot air that gets trapped in the attic all
summer is a good way to cool the rest of the house.
Think
of it this way:
You have a nice, tall, cool glass of
iced tea, chock full of ice cubes sitting on the kitchen table.
It's hot in the kitchen because there's a cake baking in the oven.
You get...

Do you have a sensitive sniffer? I mean, does
your nose burn and itch when you get in the detergent aisle at the
grocery store? How do you get relief?
For some, food odors, the scent of perfume and chemical smells
do more than just annoy. For those with asthma, being in
close proximity to strong scents can trigger serious respiratory
ailments. So when a friend says she doesn't want to
accompany you to the boutique filled with bath and body items, it
is probably not that she doesn't enjoy your...

Homes across America haven’t always provided two or more bathrooms
for the convenient use of all the people living there. In
fact,
most of us can remember sharing only one bathroom with two or three
people or even more.
In our house, four people needed access to the bathroom all at the
same time. Because he was the grumpiest, my Dad got use of the
bathroom before anyone else. And I very vividly remember ducking
into the bathroom after my Dad rushed out of a hot shower. He left
a big whiff of Old...

I love old houses and renovating them, so I tend to troll chat
rooms full of discussions about how to get older homes to
accommodate new technology that gives us the creature comforts our
ancestors could only dream about.

I find that some DIY-ers have a lot of
enthusiasm, but less knowledge or common sense when it comes to
some of the projects. One in particular that seems to crop up time
and again is about
venting exhaust fans in attics and crawl
spaces. They want to remove the moist air from the...

Every summer for several years, I dreaded the days I found
electricity bills in the mailbox. Our air conditioner kicked on all
the time and yet, there were rooms in our home that might have
actually been cooled better by opening the window and turning on a
box fan.
Then we learned about solar attic fans, one of the products we have
here at AirFlow Technology. Choices include the Roof Mounted
Solar attic fan, available in 10-watt, 20-watt and 30-watt or the
Gable Mounted Solar attic fan, also...

It really isn't often, but occasionally we get asked about the
AirFlow Technology
return policy. Usually, oddly enough, it is before someone
purchases an Airflow Breeze register vent booster fan. (I don't
think they believe the difference this little baby will make in
their lives - or at least their homes!!)
So for those of you who like to be in the know before making an
online purchase:

Basically, we will accept returns within 30 days of purchase for a
refund of hte purchase price of the unit,...

Did you know that there are an estimated 10,000 attic
fires in residential buildings every year? I was shocked -
and then the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) goes on to say that
these fires cause an estimated 30 deaths, 125 injuries and $477
million in property loss.
Electrical malfunction is the leading cause, but the second
leading cause they list is "natural fires."
I don't know exactly what a "natural fire" is, but
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the amount of heat
that builds...

In 2010 President Obama urged Congress to pass a group of
incentives to encourage citizens to make their homes more energy
efficient. That "Homestar" legislation has not been passed - yet -
but the message is clear.
The ozone layer shows further damage
Recently the U.N. weather agency said that the depletion of the
ozone layer over the Arctic region "has reached an unprecedented
level," noting a loss of 40% from the beginning of the winter to
late March (2011). -CNN
Part of the reason for this...

Everywhere I go I keep
hearing people say, "Spring is coming! Spring is coming!"
You know what spring means to me? It means it's time to
prepare for the heat of a central Indiana summer.
Let me explain:
I can't tell you how many times I have heard people
(usually men) talk about installing attic fans or in-line duct fans
- AFTER it's already 90 - 100 degrees out. Then in the
next breath, they complain about how hot it is up in the attic when
they are trying to install the unit.
I mean, come on, if...

Over
the last couple of years I have witnessed something I think is
pretty remarkable happening between Indianapolis and
Chicago on I-65. Right around West Lafayette, Ind., spread
out across acres of farmland, a wind turbine farm has cropped
up. I've watched them grow in number for some time, amazed
at the sheer size of each of the windmill structures. I'll admit I
could be caught ogling out the window like I was seeing skyscrapers
or the larger-than-life structures in Las Vegas for the...

This
summer has been one of the hottest on record but something really
cool has happened. The Ten Million Solar Roofs Act of 2010
(S.3460) was passed by the Energy and Natural Resources Committee
on July 21. The Act was introduced by
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Here at Airflow Technology, we are all about saving energy and
reducing the costs associated with heating and cooling homes. So we
listen when Sanders explains the goal of the Act is to get
solar electric or water heating systems on...

Finding
ways to reduce your carbon footprint (CO2 usage) in the heat
of summer can be a challenge. But there are some easy changes you
can make to save energy and money right away.
1.
Take control of the temperature. It is a myth
that setting the temperature on your AC lower
will cool quicker. The HVAC system cools at the same rate whether
the thermostat is set at 65 or 75 degrees F. Setting it lower just
makes it run longer to achieve the temperature setting.
What will help is a programmable...

I hadn't thought about something I discovered on the
OneProjectCloser website. They were talking about shingles. OK,
to some that might not be an exciting topic, but when you want to
live a little greener and save energy and money, you look for
ways all around the house!
Anyway, what they say about shingles and saving money is
this:
Attic
fans can also increase the life of shingles on your roof
by preventing cracking damage due to extreme heat and cold cycles.
By reducing the extreme...

Cleaning out the garage is always a chore because I have "stuff" I
want to keep and nowhere to put it.
Our attic gets really
hot in the summer. So hot that I don't want to store
anything up there because I am afraid it will get damaged - or
spontaneously combust! This year, before it gets so hot you can't
stand to be up there, I thought we might try to do something about
it - and make room for some of that stuff up there.
I already know about having the proper
insulation. So that's already been...

Attic exhaust fans, particularly energy- and cost-saving
solar-powered attic fans, can be a great help in removing hot
air from the top level of your house to make your entire
home more comfortable. But I've heard some concern about the attic
fans pulling cool air-conditioned air from the interior as well.
The answer to that is insulation.
Having the proper amount and kind of insulation in the
attic - and throughout your home - is key to maintaining a
comfortable temperature in all seasons. I...

I have a friend who is a
confirmed renter. She rents her apartment, her
furniture and her TV. She checks books, CDs and DVDs out of the
library. She even dog-sits when she feels the need for a furry
companion. She doesn't want the commitment, responsibility or
expense of owning her own home. She likes the freedom that comes
with not having to make arrangements to move so much when she
decides to relocate or travel. It's not so much a commitment-phobia
as it is being a free spirit and preferring...

In one of my
recent blog posts I talked about how the
development of the AirFlow Breeze Ultra register booster fan was in
response to customer feedback and how well received the unit has
been since introduced late last year.
Mark Adkins at the Gadgeteer reviewed the AirFlow
Breeze Ultra, comparing it to a previous review of the
forerunner, the AirFlow Breeze. He pointed out in his review many
of the updates and improvements.
He also said:
The room feels more
comfortable...not by a ton, but it defin...
